Labor Day Weekend of 2013 saw an unparalleled confluence of musical talent descend upon Chicago as participants in Vamos Celebration arrived for an epic afternoon of music on September First at Orchestra Hall.
The Pacifica Quartet, Members of the Ying Quartet, Eric Kim, Benny Kim, Aimee Kreston, Elisa Barston, Stephanie Arado, Korey Konkol, Vincent Meklis, Sean Riley, Jing Qiao, Sang Mee Lee, Dave Moss and close to one-hundred additional students and friends of the Vamoses returned to Chicago to pay tribute to these beloved pedagogues in this monumental concert.
Almita and Roland Vamos have been pillars of music education for over 45 years, and a list of their former and current students reads like a “Who’s Who” of classical music. The Vamoses have shaped generations of achievement in classical music, from some of today’s most prominent concert artists, to winners and laureates of the world’s major competitions, principals and section members of the country’s finest orchestras, and members of Grammy Award winning quartets.
With music-industry legend Henry Fogel presiding as Master of Ceremonies, Vamos Celebration welcomed myriad virtuosi to the stage in a program featuring movements from the Mendelssohn Octet, Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, the Handel-Halvorsen Pasacaglia, Brahms Violin Concerto, Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings and numerous other masterworks of the string repertoire.
“Roland and Almita Vamos have been an unstoppable force in the musical world for the past half century,” says Edward Kreitman, Vamos Celebration Organizer and Producer. “It has been an absolute honor and life changing experience to know and learn from the Vamoses, and the outpouring of excitement from students coming to Chicago from across the globe shows that I am not alone in this sentiment!”
